How to prepare for your interview:
- Update resume, references, and certifications
- Families will most likely check all of these, so make sure they are reliable!
- Review the job description so you know specific information
- Age of children, how many, proposed hours, what is expected of you
- Prepare examples of past childcare experience
- Families want to know how you are going to handle their kids and if you are good in stressful situations
- Dress comfortably, but professional
- Although this isn’t a corporate job, you must still look presentable
- Arrive early! Punctuality is important!
- Have a few questions prepared for the family
- One is better than none!
During the interview:
- Be confident and personable! You’re going to be spending a lot of time with this family.
- Sell yourself, but don’t make anything up.
- Highlight your strengths (reliability, communication, etc…)
- Professionalism and attitude make a difference!
- Ask questions!
- Don’t go into a job blind! Asking is better than not knowing.
After the interview:
- Follow up with a thank you email
- Express thanks and how much you want the job
- Be prepared to get asked for a background check, additional references, or certifications
Be prepared for common questions!
- What experience do you have working with children?
- Can you describe a time when you had to handle a difficult situation with a child?
- How do you ensure a safe environment for the children you are caring for?
- Why do you like working with kids?
- What certifications or training do you have for childcare?
- Why should we hire you?
Sample questions to ask families:
- What is your preferred form of communication?
- Are there any household routines or expectations that I need to know about?
- Do your children have any allergies/take medications/special needs?
- What does a typical day look like around your house and for the children?
- How do you handle discipline, and how do you prefer I handle it?
- What does the pay look like? How often will I get paid, and how?
Strong Childcare Resume
Tips:
- Contact Information: First & Last Name, Phone Number and Email (if you check it frequently)
- Experience listed out with family LAST name, do NOT mention childrens names just ages
- More detail, less color
- List of certifications and expiration dates at bottom or side
