Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Interview

  • Update your resume, references & certifications Families will most likely check all of these — make sure they’re current and reliable before your interview.
  • Review the job description thoroughly Know the ages of the children, how many, proposed hours, and what will be expected of you so you can speak confidently.
  • Prepare examples of past childcare experience Families want to know how you handle their kids and how you respond in stressful or unexpected situations. Have 2–3 stories ready.
  • Dress comfortably, but professionally This isn’t a corporate job — but you still need to make a great first impression. Keep it clean and put-together.
  • Arrive early — punctuality matters Being on time shows the family you respect their schedule, which is a major green flag for childcare roles.
  • Have a few questions ready for the family One question is better than none. Asking shows you’re engaged and thinking seriously about the role.

    • Never make anything up — honesty builds lasting trust

Resume Building

Building a Strong Childcare Resume

1

Contact Information

Include your first & last name, phone number, and a professional email address you check frequently.

2

List Experience Correctly

Use the family’s last name only — never list children’s names. Include their ages and what your responsibilities were.

3

More Detail, Less Color

Descriptive bullet points beat flashy formatting. Families want to know what you actually did, not look at a pretty template.

4

List Certifications

Include CPR, first aid, and any childcare certifications with their expiration dates at the bottom or side of your resume.
